Steve Lubbers was the gentlest of souls who graced his time on earth, and with us at Beloit, for too short a time.  I'm grateful to have seen his name on this list of the Beloit class of '74 prompting me to reflect on my time with him.

In addition to knowing Steve on the Beloit campus, I had the very good fortune to be part of a small group of Beloiters taking our field trips in the San Francisco area in the same semester.  Jenny Miller, Marc Koslen, Eli Goldblatt, Steve and I formed a close group, getting together frequently on weekends.  We also had a wonderful camping trip to Big Sur and Yosemite.  On our last collective day together in S.F., we gathered on a beach on the ocean to watch the sunset.  I still have a letter from Steve in which he mentioned that day, including a small sketch of the view.

Marc, Jenny and Eli all eventually left Beloit to follow other paths.  Steve eventually dropped out but stayed in the Beloit area.  Towards the end of the summer semester '73 Steve left to hitchhike to Minneapolis.  We said goodby not having any idea he would never return.  He was killed in a car crash on that trip.

Steve knew, loved, and was loved by a lot of people at Beloit and his death left a lot of us unmoored.  Steve made living in the moment an art form, making others feel their time with him was blessed by his presence.  To this day I feel gratitude for having had Steve in my life.
